X40Cr13 Flat Bars are High Chromium Martensitic Stainless tool steel flat bars designed for applications requiring a combination of hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and good surface finish. They are widely used for plastic moulds, mould inserts, tooling, precision components, dies, punches and other engineering applications.
X40Cr13 is commonly associated with 420 / 420B / 420C and related chromium stainless mould-steel designations, although exact grade equivalence should always be confirmed against the applicable material standard and mill test certificate. Industry references identify X40Cr13 type steels as suitable for plastic moulding applications, particularly where corrosion resistance, polishability and wear resistance are important.
The interaction between carbon and chromium is central to this grade. Carbon allows the steel to form a hard martensitic structure upon quenching. Chromium creates a passive oxide layer on the surface, which protects the steel from corrosion in mild atmospheric and chemical environments. By controlling these elements, you can achieve high wear resistance while retaining essential stainless properties.
