Description
Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) Plates
Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) Plates is a wear-resistant steel plate made by depositing a layer of chromium carbide alloy onto a mild steel base using welding overlay technology.
It is widely used in industries where abrasion, impact, and wear are major concerns.
CCO, or chromium carbide overlay, only contains chromium-rich carbides. Overlays can also be of the complex carbide type. In these products other alloys such as Nb, Mo, V and W are added to the chromium carbide.
Complex carbides are usually a preferred choice in hot wear situations since they can maintain full wear resistance in temperatures up to 600 °C (1100 °F). As complex carbides typically give 3-5 times longer service life compared to CCO, they are also suitable if the thickness of the overlay is restricted.
The overlay surface of CCO plate will consist of a series of beads with numerous hairline cracks in them. These properly spaced crosscheck cracks are a natural phenomenon and are beneficial to the material. The cracks propagate through the overlay and end at the fusion line.
A chromium carbide plate (or Chromium Carbide Overlay/CCO plate) is a heavy-duty, wear-resistant composite material. It consists of a standard carbon or mild steel base plate overlaid with a metallurgically bonded, super-hard layer of chromium carbide.
Standard Specifications :
Thickness:
• Base Plate: 5 mm – 50 mm
• Overlay: 3 mm – 20 mm
Size:
• Standard: 1400 x 3000 mm, 1500 x 3000 mm
• Custom sizes available
Structure of CCO Plate :
A typical chromium carbide plate consists of:
Base Plate (Mild Steel / Structural Steel)
→ Provides strength, weldability, and support
Overlay Layer (Chromium Carbide Alloy)
→ Extremely hard surface (typically 55–65 HRC)
→ Rich in chromium carbides (Cr₇C₃)
Bond Layer (Fusion zone)
→ Ensures strong metallurgical bonding
Property Value :
Hardness 55–65 HRC
Wear Resistance Excellent
Temperature Resistance Up to ~600°C
Impact Resistance Moderate
Corrosion Resistance Good (due to chromium)
Application of CCO plates :
Cement Industry – Chutes, hoppers, clinker lines
Mining & Quarrying – Dump truck beds, liners
Power Plants – Coal handling systems
Steel Plants – Blast furnace components
Sugar & Paper Industry – Screw conveyors, ducts
Design Features
Cost effective solution when compared to traditional abrasion-resistant steels
Recommended for resistance to wear by abrasion, fretting, cavitation, and particle erosion in high temperature applications (up to 1100°F).
Ideal for mild to moderate impact abrasion resistance.
Low maintenance cost and easy installation.
