1.4122 Round Bars / X39CrMo17-1 Round Bars
1.4122 Round Bars is a Martesitic Stainless Steel grade, which can be hardened with heat threatment. This grade is written as 1.4122 or X39CrMo17-1 according to EN norm. 1.4122 material does not have a really good corrosion resistance but still enough for many applications. The mechanical properties of 1.4122 is good and because of high carbon content, the hardness can be above 50 HRC after heat threatment. This grade usually used in pump shafts, checmical indistries, when high mechanical values and high hardness is required.
1.4122 is characterised by its combination of outstanding mechanical properties, (after heat treatment) and a corrosion resistance which is comparable with that of 1.4016. This steel can also be polished to high gloss finishes.
420RM / 1.4122 is one of the stainless steel grades with the highest degree of hardness due to its high carbon content. In addition to high hardness, its toughness and corrosion resistance are also very high. Corrosion resistance same or slightly better than 1.4122 – 1.4016. Excellent mechanical properties that can be achieved by targeted heat treatment. It also provides relative preservation of its mechanical properties at increasing temperatures.
Due to the molybdenum additive, the sensitivity to cavitation is lower. It reaches optimum corrosion resistance with a polished surface.
What type of steel is 420RM?
420RM shows outstanding mechanical properties with good corrosion resistance that can be polished to a high gloss finish. Due to the added chromium, up to 17%, it has a higher corrosion resistance compared to stainless steels with for example 13% of chromium.
Though it has a good corrosion resistance, this stainless steel should not be used in seawater but can be used in freshwater for valves or pump shafts for marine- or mechanical engineering for instance.

Applications of 1.4122 / X39CrMo17-1 :
SS 1.4122 (X39CrMo17-1) is used in a range of industrial sectors, including the automotive, construction and food industries. This material is also used in mechanical engineering and apparatus construction, in the cutlery industry and in plastics processing (polymer processing). Stainless steel 1.4122 is used to make knives and surgical instruments, fittings, machine parts and compressors, for example. Pump parts such as pump shafts are also made from this steel.
