Description
SA537 Class 1 Plates
SA537 Class 1 Plates is a normalised steel which is heat treated and as a consequence displays greater yield and tensile strength than the more standard ASTM A516 grades. The steel is ideal for use in pressurised service both in boilers and pressure vessels.
This grade is commonly used in pressure vessel applications where low temperature resistance to notch sensitivity is needed and added strength levels are needed. Class 1 is normalized and the tensile is in the 70,000 – 90,000 level. Class 2 is quenched and tempered with a tensile range of 80,000 – 100,000. Minimum yield strength for class 1 is 50,000 and for class 2 is 60,000.
The ASTM A537 specification is the Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Heat-Treated, Carbon-Manganese-Silicon Steel used in the applications of fusion welded pressure vessels and structures. Typical applications are pressure vessels designed for moderate and lower-temperature service requiring excellent notch toughness as well as API 650 and API 620 storage tanks. Class 1 material is available as Normalized and Class 2 is available as Quenched & Tempered plates.
